Ghosts of Halloweens Past

I think, especially lately, I can't help but feel let down by holidays because I've built them up so much in my head. Like, there's this idealized image of what "Halloween" should look like and its the thing found in movies like "Hocus Pocus" and "Halloweentown" - only the latter of which I remembered to watch this year.

This year was rougher than most. When I was a kid it was easy, since there's a lot of stuff dedicated to kids for Halloween and a lot of time set aside for kids to celebrate it. Last year I watched "The Nightmare Before Christmas" for the first time and ate popcorn for the first time in months. This year I remembered to try and get caught up on American Horror Story. I'm about to finish the fifth season but it doesn't really feel the same. Horror films and Kathy Bates were never a part of my Halloween ritual before so its a bit jarring that they are now instead of cheesy Halloween specials, carving jack-o-lanterns, and eating copious amounts of candy.

I think some of this change can be attributed to growing up, but I think a lot of it rests at the feet of an election from hell. Even when I'm not thinking about it it seems to poison everything. And in true 2016 fashion, Halloween falls on a Monday so I can't get plastered in order to forget it - though getting drunk to avoid reality isn't a habit I particularly want to form. And that's not to say a lot of it doesn't rest at my feet. I've prioritized getting caught up with the obscene amount of television I watch rather than try to rewatch "Trick 'r Treat" or one of those "Scooby-Doo" TV movies they made in the eighties. You know, the last ones they made before they permanently wrote out Scrappy-Doo?

And that's not to say this year hasn't been great in other ways. I went apple picking for the first time. Made wine twice - once to celebrate the end of summer and again from those apples I helped pick. Not to mention that Alex and Mads introduced me to "Over the Garden Wall", which may be one of the best things I've ever watched. I could go on about corn mazes and spooky games of the board and video varieties, but it really just serves to illustrate how maybe I got a lot more done than I thought I did. I've had two pumpkin spice frappuccinos this month! It's the curse of high expectations.

One clear failure this year, however, is the candy. The basket at our house is mostly Snickers and I hate Snickers. I mean there are M&Ms and Skittles but, like, it's not the same as candy bars. Maybe next year. And maybe next year I'll make the time to watch stuff like "Coraline", "ParaNorman", and "Corpse Bride". Just to get a little closer to seeing that cheesy stereotype of Halloween.

I could probably still do "The Nightmare Before Christmas" though. It's kind of a Christmas movie too.

Happy Halloween!

We did carve pumpkins this year, so y'know if you ever get the urge, there's definitely no age limit on that tradition lol
For Halloween we mostly celebrated by playing a bunch of horror movies. Between the 30th and 31st we watched like... six movies. Way more than I'm used to lol
So yeah, Halloweens are pretty tame as an adult (unless you have friends who throw parties I guess?), but they're still enjoyable. I'm just sad that now I live so close to a full-candy-bar neighborhood, but I'm way too old to go trick-or-treating lol
...I ended each sentence with "lol" I am so tired omg
