Thinking About Movies

Back in 2007, I had a lot of stuff going on. Well that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but I was having constant mental stress about being in high school. So when the movie adaption of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix came out I was in no rush to see it. It was my least favorite book in the series and I had gotten mixed feedback on how it was, which was compounded by the fact that the Goblet of Fire movie wasn't very good. I kept putting it off until, before I knew it, it had left theaters, and I had fallen behind completely on the films. I wouldn't get the motivation to catch up until Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them came out in 2016.

I make no secret of the fact that I'm very bad at seeing movies. Like, really bad - Especially when it comes to seeing movies in theaters. I've consistently managed to see the new Star Wars movies and all the Hunger Games movies in theaters, but those have been more of the exception than any rule. But recently it seems like the tides may be turning, and I'm all the happier for it.

In the past year I've tried to make more of a point in watching movies. For the most part, its been films and franchises that have passed me by in the years since Order of the Phoenix. I watched animated films like Brave and Rise of the Guardians, high class fair like the Carol, and pulpy dreck like Jurassic World. I also went back and visited material I never paid attention to as a kid, such as the Indiana Jones movies and the original Jurassic Park movies. I got caught up with the DCEU (kill me) and watched Wonder Woman in theaters (but not Justice League lmao). At the advice of friends, I watched the director's cut of the first Blade Runner movie, though it ultimately was not in time to see 2049 in theaters.

Over the past couple of months, with more freedom of movement in my comings and goings from work in Manhattan, I've discovered how easy it is to see movies on a whim now. I managed to see A Wrinkle in Time, Love, Simon, and Annihilation in theaters even as they're at the end of their theatrical runs - when I had initially assumed that I would only ever see them via streaming or not at all. I made a point to watch every Marvel Cinematic Universe film and saw both Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War in theaters (though the latter might have been one of my worst theater-going experiences ever).

All in all, I've rediscovered why I loved going to the movies so much as a little kid (and it isn't the concessions that seem WAY more expensive as an adult). For the most part, I can check in on a story without needing to invest several years into it like I would a television show, and the actual experience of sitting in a theater adds a level to the experience that can't be recreated in my living room.

I've already bought my ticket to see Solo: A Star Wars Story, and I'm hopeful I'll get to see Breaking In and Deadpool 2 at some point in the next few weeks. That is, if I remember to get caught up on all the other X-Men movies, I'll go see Deadpool 2.
