"Avengers: Endgame" - Pre-Viewing Thoughts and Reflections

I didn't time this as well as I would've liked, as I have to leave in 20 minutes to catch a train into Manhattan as I write this post. But I just finished rewatching Infinity War for the first time since I've seen it in theaters in preparation for seeing Endgame tonight. I've been blessed in that up until now I've managed to remain unspoiled due to avoiding social media the last couple of days.

I actually spent most of the past decade ignoring the Marvel movies. I grew up on DC so I didn't really have any particular affinity for these characters from my childhood. Though I should say I don't have any particular fondness for the DCEU, so it's not an issue of tribalism as much as passive disinterest. But then Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, and Black Panther came out, and for the first time I really felt the pull to want to actually go out and see a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. But I'm a completionist at heart, so I knew I had to do this properly. And with Infinity War on the horizon, I set out to watch every film in the MCU.

Honestly, I'm kind of glad i only started watching these movies recently. I actively disliked most of the Phase 2 films and only really felt a deeper connection to this series once it entered Phase 3. Black Panther ended up being far and away my favorite in the series, so that made my experience seeing Infinity War last year all the more disappointing. I found the film oddly paced due to the sheer amount of characters and the scope of the crossover, to the point where it felt like I was watching a math problem unfold on screen at points. The theater I was in left the lights on, and the children in the theater with me had a viscerally negative reaction to the ending. Not to mention, I was acutely aware through the entire experience that I was seeing a "Part 1" movie.

Going into Endgame now, I'm a bit more forgiving. On second viewing in the privacy and comfort of my own home, I still have many of the same issues I had with the film initially. However, I have more of an appreciation for what they were trying to accomplish. (And it didn't hurt that I correctly guessed that Red Skull would be coming back in this movie as soon as I watched the end of Captain America: The First Avenger, something apparently no one else really saw coming).

Now, sitting down to frantically write out my thoughts for what I think Endgame will be, I just hope it's a satisfying film that makes the events of Infinity War worth it. I want to come out of this movie with a sense of hope, even though I suspect this will be the swan song for Tony Stark and almost definitely the swan song for Steve Rogers. I think that the people predicting Carol Danvers will die 20 minutes into the movie are full of shit, and I ultimately think that the solution will be much simpler than a lot of the reddit theories would suggest. This is a confusing mess of a franchise, but it's still one for the mass market.

Oh, and if Chris Hemsworth is shirtless at all in it, that would be pretty great too. Well, and I'd rather not watch Thor die, thanks Marvel.

I gotta go catch my train now. See you all on the other side!
