New Year, Same Goals

It's been a hot minute since I've made a more casual post, and I want to start doing more of these instead of exclusively using this account for giant Doctor Who reviews or motivating myself to write fanfic.

Writing: I started a bunch of fic drafts last year (and the year before) that I never got around to finishing. New mini-goal for 2022 is to finish at least some of those (and fill in more spaces on the 100ships challenge). Also lowkey wanna start writing some Fortnite fic (because I am a clown) but I'm probably gonna have to untangle the lore a little fic first even if I just end up writing about Jonesy getting dicked down lmao.

Gaming: Been playing a lot more Animal Crossing and just got into the Happy Home Paradise expansion. I'm also still in Fortnite hell, and I've started playing some Indie Games on the Switch because of a sale they had towards the end of last year. So far I'm really digging Figment and Wandersong but I'm hoping to play more once I've finished with those.

Television: I'm halfway through the most recent season of You, but honestly I haven't been that inspired to watch much Live Action TV the past month or so aside from Drag Race (and Queen of the Universe and Drag Race Italia were pretty big letdowns imo). I'm excited for the new US season but I really feel like I'm in a rut... which may not be a bad thing? I was consuming a lot of content for a very long time so I could probably stand to slow down a little.

Movies: Encanto and Spider-Man: No Way Home were great, but - especially with the Omicron variant - my big return to watching movies hasn't really panned out. Even before that I never got around to watching Dune, and I did see Eternals but thought it was really bad. Trying to jazz myself up to watch The Matrix and Scream movies for the first time but so far no dice.

Doctor Who: I really liked Eve of the Daleks, but I didn't think it was remarkably better or worse than Flux like a lot of the takes have been. (Though admittedly I guess I liked Flux more than most?) I'm currently wading my way through the "Lost Season" season 27 Big Finish audios, before I figure out how I'm gonna tackle the actual Wilderness Years content and the TV Movie. I also finally started The Edge of Reality... but the controls on Switch are kind of difficult (and it's very obvious that it was originally designed as a VR game) so I kind of haven't gotten back to it. Either way, I'm happy that I still have a wealth of content to get through considering the next two specials seem to be the only New Who we are gonna be getting for quite a while.

In Flux

This is a bit late, but I wanted to get some time to digest the newest season of Doctor Who and get away from the inevitable fandom discourse in order to get some perspective on it that wasn't super clouded by external chatter. Overall, I really liked this season, and I thought this serial was, more or less, successful in what it set out to do. I also thought this was probably the strongest overall season of the Thirteenth Doctor's run, owing at least partially to not having a low-tier episode like The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos or Orphan 55 to pull down the average.

Classic Doctor Who, Season 26 Review

So I finally did it! I completed all of the original run of Classic Doctor Who... a little over a week ago. (I've been busy). I still have a few more things to cover, but it feels really cool finishing something I started way back in 2017, when the then-upcoming Twice Upon a Time motivated me to watch all of the First Doctor's run. Now with the Thirteenth Doctor's Timeless Child arc seemingly coming to a head with this new season, it feels fitting that I now have all the (aired) pieces of the Cartmel Masterplan from the Seventh Doctor era under my belt.

Also, I'm really happy that the show went out on such a high note. While I've enjoyed the latter years of Classic Who, all the seasons past The Five Doctors have felt decidedly mixed in a way that felt weird as a norm (though thankfully each season still had at least one story that felt like a standout). Season 26, while perhaps a bit over-plotted, feels well realized, and I appreciated the attention given to the characters of the Doctor and Ace along the way. Like, I love a good bit of lore, but I personally believe Doctor Who is at its best when its truly invested in its characters. I'm really looking forward to cracking open my Bluray set for this one and exploring some of the special features.

Like the previous twenty-five seasons, the serials are available to watch via streaming on Britbox. This season was a bit tricky to rank since I think all these stories have very similar strengths and weaknesses.

There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, where the sea's asleep, and the rivers dream. People made of smoke, and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, and somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on, Ace, we've got work to do! )

Classic Doctor Who, Season 25 Review

Usually by the second series of a Doctor's run I have a pretty good grasp of their character and what the actor in the role is ultimately aiming for, but it's not until the end of this one that I really felt like I've met the Seventh Doctor. It really highlights both how short his overall tenure is, and how the shorter season format doesn't mask the fact that there are, in fact, fewer episodes. (Seasons 24 and 25 combined is 28 episodes, which is around the length of what a single season previously was.) Suffice to say, much like last season this season feels like a very mixed bag. Though, unless it's a fluke, by the end it really feels like the show and the new head writer have found their footing. Though, in a weird way, it didn't evoke a lot of strong feelings in me as a whole, so I suspect this might be the shortest review I've written so far.

Like the previous twenty-four seasons, the serials are available to watch via streaming on Britbox. Ranking this season felt very... odd. The stories all felt very different so it was strange comparing them, though picking my favorite story in the bunch was relatively easy.

Classic Doctor Who, Season 24 Review

So I decided to abandon my plans to binge all of the Seventh Doctor before I turned 30 in mid-June, and as a result watching this season ended up being more of a slow drip than I had expected. Part of this was because I had originally planned to read the companion novels in between the Sixth and Seventh Doctor eras... but I couldn't resist seeing how they would handle the regeneration at the top of this season, so I ended up diving in without a second thought. And it certainly handled the transition as well as it could have. Everything about this season is extremely transitional, perhaps even more than past "transitional" seasons like Seasons 11, 18, and 21. This season had a brand new Doctor and a brand new head writer, but still had artifacts left over from the premature end of the Sixth Doctor's era such as Mel Bush, and the continued presence of John Nathan-Turner as the series producer. The end result was a lot of new, fresh elements of the series mixed in with elements that felt out of place.

It also doesn't help that there's been a clear time jump between the previous season and this one, contributing to the sense of disorientation as he's developed a relationship with his companion which we've only seen small pieces of. That said, I think this season manages to hit the beats in needs to, and clean up storylines enough to set up for a really strong future for this era of the show. It's still early, but I've already caught a glimpse of why so many people vibed with this Doctor, especially coming off more divisive runs earlier in the decade.

Like the previous twenty-two seasons, the serials are available to watch via streaming on Britbox. I very much suspect my ranking are going to be at odds with what a lot of fandom thinks about this season, but that's life I suppose.

Arbitrary Milestones

Yesterday I turned 30, and I ended up not doing much of anything (partially due to the pandemic, partially due to poor planning and foresight on my part). I did think a lot about certain milestones I hadn't hit on my fitness goals/writing/etc., but a day out it all feels just as arbitrary. Aside from the number on my social media changing it doesn't really feel like I'm in my 30s, especially since pretty much everyone agrees the past year has been a wash so I can still pretend I'm 29 if I want and society probably wouldn't judge me for it.

I didn't meet my arbitrary goal of finishing Classic Who before I turned 30 but that might be for the best, since I would have rushed through the Seventh Doctor era at lightning speed (and I'm enjoying it too much to do that). I also realized that I was so eager to see how'd they'd handle the regeneration I started Season 24 without reading those Companion novels like I'd planned, so now I think I need to go back and think about when I'm going to tackle those. (Especially since the Brigadier shows up in that and I know he pops back up in Season 26's Battlefield.)

July will be ten years since I started a particular multi-chapter fic so I think my immediate writing goal is finishing that up before anything else. I am in the midst of consuming a bunch of gay media (mostly Tales of the City) for Pride Month though so I may end up seguing into writing something more in line with that first. I have some Merlin prompts due at the end of the year that might be a good outlet for that.

C'est la vie, Star Wars

So last year I bailed in a major way on Star Wars because in the fallout from The Rise of Skywalker, interacting with the property in any way was making me miserable and it got to the point I needed to divest for my own sanity. (And this was even before the pandemic lockdowns started!) However, the final season of The Clone Wars was also finally released last year, and so I decided that on May the 4th, when the final episode was released, I'd spend the day binging the whole thing (as well as the last string of episodes of Star Wars Resistance).

And I had a really good time.

At the time it had been four months since I'd touched Star Wars at that point and I think the time away did me good. I got to close out two Star Wars properties I was already invested in and they both had the added benefit of being really good. I decided that, when new content came around again, instead of getting tangled up in the day-to-day minutia, I'd save it for May the 4th and binge it then.

So yesterday on May the 4th, I sat down to watch season 2 of The Mandalorian, which I'd heard decidedly mixed things about (and that's even before taking into consideration all of Gina Carano's bullshit). And, I, uh, couldn't get into it. Like, I was never as into season 1 of The Mandalorian as other people were but I still enjoyed it, but I couldn't bring myself to care about anything that was happening in the episode or even continue on from there. The new show that premiered yesterday, The Bad Batch, is also a continuation of The Clone Wars and a prequel to Rebels, two shows I enjoyed, but I also couldn't muster up the motivation for that either.

And now a day later on "Revenge of the Fifth" I can't say I really care anymore.

So I think I'm gonna call 2021 as the year I've successfully divested from Star Wars. It had been a steady, positive presence in my life for four years (2016 - 2019) and pretty miserable presence on-and-off for another (2020) and I think it's served its purpose. I never watched it as a child so I don't have any baggage of that nature attached to it, so I'm pretty comfortable making a clean break. Now I just have to decide how much of the limited merchandise I have I'm gonna bother to keep and what I'm gonna give away.

Classic Doctor Who, Season 23 Review

Well I finally made it to the end of the Sixth Doctor era (though I honestly made it two weeks ago, but I'd been putting off finishing this review), and I'm honestly impressed that I managed to stretch it out as long as I did. Knowing this era's reputation, I was ambivalent going in, but I actually ended up really liking Colin Baker's spin on the character. I just wish his batch of stories wasn't so decidedly mixed (and it definitely had more duds than home runs). This season was no exception, though I think a lot of the blame lays squarely at the feet of the trial sequences which throw off the pacing for a lot of the serials-within-a-serial. I like the conceit, but the cracks in the production really showed this season, and despite having the same production team as the past few seasons, it has the same energy as a transitional year. As much blame can (rightfully) be laid at the feet of John Nathan-Turner, I can't say I disagree with any of the creative decisions he made on this season specifically, and I think going into the Seventh Doctor's era with some fresh blood is definitely a good thing.

After knowing about this season for years, actually watching it unfold was a mix of missed and exceeded expectations. In a way, I guess it sums up the Sixth Doctor's era. The format of this season at least allows for a peak of where it could have gone on television and where it did on audio years later, and I ultimately do thing the show is better having gone through this experimental season. It's for this reason that, while I'm frustrated this Doctor doesn't have the same kind of ending as other Doctors, it's afforded him the opportunity to revisit and grow in the role in the time since.

Like the previous twenty-two seasons, the serials are available to watch via streaming on Britbox. This season was one big story divided into four smaller chunks, which made it interesting to rank.

back on track

Since I now have a rough idea of when I'll be able to get vaccinated, I'm once again attempting to get myself in a good workout routine. This time I have someone holding me accountable, so I'm hopeful this will be the time where it actually sticks. I also haven't watched any anime in the past couple of weeks so I can play catch up with that while I'm on the elliptical rather than try to force my way through Digimon Xros Wars, since at this point watching that feels like a deterrent.

I started RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 5, which means I'm almost caught up with the currently airing seasons. I'm glad because I feel like constantly binging it is making me reach critical mass, and I need to transfer my energy over to something else. Maybe I'll finally get back into audio books now that I'm making my way through some of the Doctor Who audio materials.

I'm also playing Animal Crossing on and off again which I'm pretty happy about. A big part of why is that [personal profile] wellfourthings recently got the game, but some of my other friends started playing again which has been nice. I preordered the new Story of Seasons game so I can always switch over to that if I feel burnt out in a couple of weeks.

the boys are back, the boys are sad

Managed to finally fix my sleep schedule and get on a cycle where i don't have to drug myself to get to sleep and set six alarms to get up, but it's also coinciding with things ramping up at work so I'm still feeling a bit tense. It's been one of the few times this past year where I think I would actually benefit from being at the office.

I feel like if I can manage to get back on some semblance of a consistent exercise routine it'll do wonders I just haven't quite been able to make it over that hump yet. It's (finally) starting to get warm enough that I can walk around outside in a sweatshirt so maybe I'll try spending some more time doing that, especially now that I'm back to going through podcasts and audio productions and not just listening to the same five year old Waterparks song or Love Live deep cut on a loop for a week straight.

Television: I finished Drag Race US season 11 and Drag Race UK series 1 and I think I might be burnt out on it a little. I'm almost caught up though so that's great! I can't really psych myself up to watch anything else though even though I'm behind on a bunch of anime, so we'll see how that goes I guess.

Writing: It's nothing really publishable, but I'm writing snippets of fanfic again, which has been fun! Some of them have been off dw100 prompts so maybe I'll end up cleaning those up and posting them. I'm hoping I can get myself back into a headspace where I can finally finish off some projects that have been sitting in my drafts for years. Hetalia finally coming back next month should hopefully help motivate me with the fic for that.

Gaming: I'm gonna try to pick up Animal Crossing again for the St. Patrick's Day event. I made a lot of progress in my BioShock playthrough last week, and I preordered the new Pokemon Snap and Story of Seasons games and I'm looking forward to taking a crack at those too. I forked over the cash for a monthly pass for Love Live All Stars but it's not bringing the same levels of serotonin as it had so I may stop that after this month.

Classic Doctor Who, Season 22 Review

I knew going into it that the Sixth Doctor era of the show was very polarizing for a lot of people, but I didn't really know why. Part of this is that I wanted to avoid *spoilers* (as much as one can be spoiled for Classic Who anyway) but also because I never really saw any kind of widely expressed consensus, only that the Big Finish Audios really allowed Colin Baker to flourish in the role. So coming off of last season's The Twin Dilemma, I was expecting something along the lines of the sillier antics of the Williams era. Instead, I got the exact opposite. If I had to use one word to describe this season, it would probably be "bleak". This doesn't mean I hated it though - there are definite bright spots that I would be more than happy to revisit - but overall this sudden dark tone with the campy production setup honestly reminds me of some of the more fatalistic tendencies of the current Thirteenth Doctor era. And while I do think the season managed to figure itself out by the end, I also understand why it put the show in real danger of cancellation.

I will make a bold declaration though: Just going off of the stories I've seen, Colin Baker is an excellent Doctor. While he's still loud and prone to fits of anger, by the end of this season his demeanor and relationship with Peri is markedly different than it was when he debuted, and this transformation felt well structured and very much earned. I'm honestly kind of bummed he only has one more season in the role, even if its in an arc that looms large in the history of the show. It only makes me more steadfast in my decision to listen to the audio adaptions of the season 23 that never was after this.

Like the previous twenty-one seasons, the serials are available to watch via streaming on Britbox. This season had six stories, and was... interesting to rank because there were a couple of stories where I couldn't really nail down whether I actually liked them or not.

I killed him, and he forgave me. Why did he have to be so nice about it? )

Head Empty

The past month has been pretty uneventful for me personal life-wise (which imo is fine because December was pretty much hell and my dad is mostly past his health issue). Mostly I've kind of been stuck in a holding pattern of wanting to create/not being able to, and running hot and cold with whatever it is I'm watching on TV. I made it through the end of season 9 of RPDR and now I'm back to toggling between The Crown and Leverage with some occasional Classic Who sprinkled in. I thought Quarantine would be easier in winter because I kind of spend this time of year cooped up inside anyway, but at least during the bulk of 2020 I could still go for walks and sit outside as a change of pace.

I've been getting back into Hetalia mostly because I'm back to tracking news/updating the wiki for it. I have some fic drafts for it I'd like to finish but I haven't really had the motivation to write even when putting myself under the pressure of fests or challenges. Even going full caveman horny brain hasn't really moved the needle on the two decidedly nsfw drafts I have (Weirdly both for Glee. I have no idea how I suddenly got re-energized for that fandom of all things this year.) It snowed today and it's supposed to snow again tomorrow, but I'm hopeful this week I can get back in the routine of regularly exercising and that might help jump start me mentally... assuming the hot water in my apartment starts working again and I don't have to drag the landlord down here to fix it.

Other random thoughts:

Best Boys: I've already fallen behind but I'm still watching a lot of anime this winter season, and it's been a reminder of past best boys and the introduction of new best boys. The fresh roster that's been living rent-free in my brain includes Yuji and Gojo from Jujutsu Kaisen, Chrome from Dr. Stone, Keiichi from Higurashi When They Cry, and Reki and Langa from SK8 the Infinity. The boys from Jujutsu Kaisen especially are popular enough that I've hopeful there'll be some really fun merch I'll be able to buy of them in the future.

Game Girls: I've been playing a lot of Love Live All Stars to the point I decided to pay for the monthly membership for the next month specifically, for the serotonin. My bias for the Nijigasaki girls aside, I just really like the gameplay style and story mode of this app more than the original (which I've barely touched this past year save for snagging some login bonuses). I just hope I don't overextend myself and end up burning myself out on this too.

Music: If you told me a year ago that the album I'd have listened to the most at the start of 2021 was Miley Cyrus's I wouldn't have believed you. Between that, Machine Gun Kelly's album, everything Aly & AJ have done the past year and the upcoming Waterparks album I've been very happy. I wasn't a fan of the Waterparks live album though which bums me out since I actually have the bluray for that concert (which I haven't gotten around to watching yet oop). I've also been so used to listening to music by people several years older than me (or in the case of Lorde, several years younger), that it's actually kind of nice to listen to stuff by people roughly my own age (pushing 30).

Classic Doctor Who, Season 21 Review

I'm starting to write this review at 3AM on New Year's Day because I'm still buzzing from the residual energy of watching Revolution of the Daleks. Different eras, I know, but I've made a point to schedule my Classic Who binge so that New Who falls in between Doctors. And this season has the weird distinction of ending a Doctor's tenure one story before the end. So, as of this part in my review I have yet to watch The Twin Dilemma, as I wanted to start out by reflecting on the Fifth Doctor's run this season before the entrance of the Sixth Doctor dominates my attention. Last season, I was wondering if the show would be able to maintain the momentum it gained and I guess I got my answer. Like season 19, it was a decidedly mixed bag, but its stronger stories felt more reminiscent of how good Season 20 was. And I feel satisfied about that, especially considering the ones that really stuck the landing were the ones most important to the characters and the storyline of the show.

The Fifth Doctor's era was one defined by its characters in conflict. The TARDIS took the baggage from previous adventures over to the new ones, which is something that was done far less frequently with previous Doctors. Tegan's exit is abrupt, and the only reason it manages to work at all is because that character's been built up so much that her reasoning carries that extra weight. The Fifth Doctor dies saving a companion he's just met, rather than the numerous friends he's traveled with for so long and had so much history with. It reminds me of the end of the Fourth Doctor's era, when the show began letting go of what made his era what it was and began embracing what it would become. In that way, I get why they structured this season they way they did. They put the payoff of that transition at the very end: A swansong to the Doctor and the show that was, followed immediately by the Doctor and the show that will be.

And now comes the part of the review I had to rewrite because I lost my initial draft at some point in a month-long haze of depression. Which, if I go by some accounts, is the perfect mindset to tackle the Sixth Doctor's era with. And, especially considering how the Fifth Doctor's run ended, this definitely feels like a new era of the show moreso than the entrances of the last couple of Doctors did. I'm interested to see how I feel about this stretch of the show as I wade further into it, and I'm certainly not dreading it. I just kind of wished I could balance my final thoughts for one era without having to analyze a new one at the same time.

Like the previous twenty seasons, the serials are available to watch via streaming on Britbox. This season had seven stories, and mostly feels straight-forward ranking-wise. There just might be a tad too much distance between when I watched them and when I'm writing parts of this review.

I'm not acting for anyone. I was just passing through. I happened to get mixed up in this pathetic little local war. )

Early Days of December

I've had a rough week. My father ended up in the hospital (not with COVID thank god) and past the initial anxiety it's clear he's going to be okay but he's also going to be there a while, and it's going to continue to be a bit bumpy for at least the next couple of days.

☆ I distracted myself by binging all of Central Park and Emily in Paris. The former starts out shaky but gets really good as it finds its footing. The latter starts out bad and I think continues being bad, but you become used to how bad it is so at a certain point you just kind of let it wash over you. I'm currently halfway through The Queen's Gambit and it's clear why this show has been such a massive success, though I'm kind of surprised so many people were willing to give it a shot considering what could be a very dry subject matter. Speaking of dry, I'm enjoying the performances in The Crown but aside from some emotional moments in the second episode that really got me, I haven't been blown away by it. I'm only on the third episode though so I highly suspect that will change.

☆ I'm very behind on the anime I'm watching this season, and I want to catch up on some of it while exercising (I need to get rid of this holiday weight) but I haven't been in the mental headspace to really do that. I got a cavity filled today so that's definitely not happening tonight either. At least I'm current on Love Live! as I fall further into my addiction with the mobile game.

☆ Haven't written anything in a while. I usually get some inspiration around this time of year but with life stuff it's kind of zapped all my energy from me. Which is frustrating because I do have stuff I could finish off for the Buffyverse Bingo amnesty round but I don't know if I'll end up getting there.

☆ I signed back up for HelloFresh on a whim and I'm honestly glad I did, because I ended up cooking myself dinner again for the first time in weeks. I'm not sure I'll keep it for the first five weeks but it's nice not to have to go to the grocery store as often right now.

The Five Doctors Review

I think I might have set my expectations for The Five Doctors a bit too high, and I think it's mostly because its so frequently classified as something that stands out from the rest of the run of the show. In the end, it was less The Day of the Doctor and more The Three Doctors. Not bad by any means, but every much just another story in the ongoing arc of the show. And that's both an asset for it and what holds it back. Because the story is relatively thin, most of the runtime is taken up by past Doctors and Companions faffing about alongside the current cast. Which is fine, but it definitely feels like they could have accomplished something much more solid if they'd had more of a budget (and they'd actually gotten Tom Baker to return instead of having to rely on clips from the then-uncompleted Shada in order to cobble something together.)

I feel like I'm gonna be repeating myself a lot in this post, since I'm going to keep circling back to the points I just made. Part of me wants to try to find that 25th Anniversary Cut that supposedly fixes some of the technical/structural issues, but I'd rather wait for a remaster on the season 20 Blu-ray that they haven't announced yet but I'm pretty sure is coming out sometime next year. That's not to say I think this story is riddled with issues that need fixing. I actually thought this special was really good, and my reception is probably colored by the fact that the show just came off one of its strongest seasons in years. It had a lot to live up to, and I hadn't realized exactly how spoiled I'd been for this story in advance.

Like most of Classic Who, this special is available to watch via streaming on Britbox. Because it's only one episode, there's no ranking, but I'm going to format this entry the same as the others anyway.

I know this is going to be hard to believe, Doctor, but for once I mean you no harm. )

Supernatural - Post-Finale Thoughts and Reflections

I waited a couple of days to get my thoughts together and let the full impact of the finale sink in, especially coming off the waves of a fandom that seemed really determine to hate everything about this finale going into it, which is something I honestly don't understand. I hated Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the recent series finale of The 100 but I went into both of those with an open mind and with the hope that I would love them. It's an attitude I think has served me well because the amount of finales I either love or feel mixed about vastly outweigh the number of finales I truly hated. (It also probably helps that I tend to bail on shows/franchises I don't enjoy watching.)

All of that is prologue I guess to the fact that I very much did not hate the finale of Supernatural. I wouldn't go as far as to say I loved it, but I did really like it.

It's okay. You can go now. )

Supernatural - Pre-Finale Thoughts and Reflections

So the series finale of Supernatural aired last night. I've been off of social media since the episode began broadcasting and, aside from the promo and a couple of behind the scenes shots that showed them fighting some guys wearing cheap looking Halloween costumes, I've managed to remain completely unspoiled. So I decided that before I sat down to watch the end of a show I've been following on and off since I was in high school, I'd sit down and write down some of my thoughts and feelings about the show, lest my disposition be tarnished by a Star Wars or The 100 finale-level letdown. (Which, for the record, I don't expect to be the case. But hey, you never know.)

I'd google a quote for this cut, but I don't want to be spoiled so close to the finish line. )

Classic Doctor Who, Season 20 Review

While I've enjoyed every season of Classic Who so far, I think it's been pretty obvious that my enthusiasm has been dampened a bit during the previous two seasons, since it felt like for every great thing they did there was another two things that felt underwhelming. So with that in mind, it really feels like the show got a massive shot in the arm this season, and it may actually be among my favorites of the whole series. While last season struggled to balance an usually large regular ensemble, this season more than rose to the challenge while also following up on several major characters and story arcs from across the whole history of the show. I had high hopes going in, but this really reminded me how much I love this show, and couldn't have been a better lead up to something I've been anticipating for years - The Five Doctors, which, after some consideration, I'll be reviewing separately from this season.

I've previously acknowledged John Nathan-Turner and Eric Saward's proclivity toward longer, ongoing story arcs, but this is the season where it feels like it really bears fruit. The Black Guardian Trilogy in particular stands out not just in this season, but among the previous E-Space and New Beginnings Trilogies. Considering how much it was built up, and with the Black Guardian getting the occasional namedrop since The Key to Time arc in season 16, this could have so easily shit the bed. However, I feel like it ended up being easily the best Fifth Doctor material thus far, and I wouldn't be surprised if it grew in my esteem upon rewatch. It's also incredible to think that it also deftly handled the return of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, the introduction of Turlough, and the departure of Nyssa.

Like the previous nineteen seasons, the serials are available to watch via streaming on Britbox. This season had six stories, and honestly ranking most of these felt like comparing apples to oranges. I still did though.

Well, there's a probability of anything. Statistically speaking, if you gave typewriters to a treeful of monkeys, they'd eventually produce the works of William Shakespeare. )

Classic Doctor Who, Season 19 Review

So after a self-imposed break from Classic Who, lest I burn through the rest too quickly, I decided by late August that I'd had enough and would officially start the Fifth Doctor era... and then through a variety of circumstances, I only ended up finishing the season halfway through October. It's not that I disliked the season by any means - my months-long hiatus in the middle of season 8 was definitely a worse viewing pattern - but Halloween viewing plans along with other housekeeping occupied my time, not to mention Animal Crossing and other general life responsibilities. That's not to say I didn't have any issues at all, they were just very similar to the ones I had with the previous season, which are probably either the result of John Nathan-Turner's "house style" or the reverberations of the first true transitional period the show has had in a very long time.

I will say I do appreciate John Nathan-Turner's attention to more explicit character and story arcs, though it does make instances like the TARDIS team bouncing back relatively quickly from - spoilers - Adric's death all the more jarring. The parts where he failed I think were when the story ended up being too complicated or too abstract - a problem that later showrunners also have in spades. It's also the rare example of a season that I think started out rough but got progressively better as it went on, rather than hitting a rough patch somewhere in the middle or towards the end as is usually the case. And honestly, I feel like that bodes well for this era, as it means they've worked out the bugs and finished this season knowing what elements work and the kinds of character writing they can pull off with this new cast.

Like the previous eighteen seasons, the serials are available to watch via streaming on Britbox. This season had seven stories, and honestly didn't feel all that difficult to rank, at least the ones that landed towards the top and bottom.

Now listen to me, both of you. There are some rules that cannot be broken even with the Tardis. Don't ever ask me to do anything like that again. )

The Best Laid Summer Plans

☆ I had planned to do some serious writing this past weekend, but those plans got derailed and I ended up not writing anything, so as a result I've resigned to defaulting on [community profile] seasonofkink for this year and trunk a couple of summer-themed fics I've been working on until next year. Considering the amount of stress from current world events this isn't a huge shock, but I'm hopeful I'll still be able to finish up those additional [community profile] nordipalooza fill chapters at some point since they're mostly done. I also still have time left to finish [community profile] buffyversebingo, which I can focus more on since I guess [community profile] spooktoberchallenge is not happening this year. I also have a couple of autumn/halloween-themed drafts from the last couple of years I can try to finish too.

☆ The Q3 anime season is ending this week, along with my rewatches/completions of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Higurashi When They Cry. I've been collecting some brief thoughts on a running twitter thread, but suffice to say I was very surprised and impressed by the bits I hadn't seen before. In a lot of ways I actually think I enjoyed The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan more than the original show, and The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is an actual masterpiece. And aside from the very fanservicey first episode, Higurashi When They Cry Kira was actually really solid, and Outbreak was fantastic and it bums me out that they decided to not to further explore the storyline it had set up. The remake of Higurashi is one of the shows airing next season though, and I'm excited to see what changes/improvements they make to this version.

☆ As far as other TV goes, I've been slowly making my way through Classic Who season 19. I'm enjoying it, but it's definitely a mixed bag, and the show is clearly trying to figure out what its strengths are now that Tom Baker isn't in the role anymore. I'm planning on taking a break once I'm done with the season in order to focus more on Halloween/Spooky fare for October, and it feels appropriate to watch The Five Doctors for the first time in November. (Plus, I suspect November is going to be a waking nightmare, so it'll be nice to have something to distract me from it). I've also been binge-watching Sister, Sister, and depending on how I pace it out I should be finished pretty soon. I watched the Twitches movies over Kast with some friends so I've been getting a lot of Tia and Tamera lately.

☆ My finger has basically healed completely, though its still sometimes stuff when I wake up. My depression has also come and gone in waves, and I think is less because of quarantine now and mostly because of all the terrible things happening in the world. Not forcing myself to adhere to any real specific watch/writing schedule has probably helped a little. I'm hoping that diving full force into Halloween will be what salvages my mental health for at least the next five weeks.
