3rd-Oct-2019 01:51 pm - Fictober Delay
fh14: (Mao [Pokemon Sun & Moon])
I haven't given up on Fictober already! I think I may have bitten off more than I could chew by filling multiple prompts a day, though, and both of my fills from yesterday ended up going much longer than I intended, and I don't want to force conclusions because I really like what I've written (rare) and the prose I did write with that intention sucked. So this week's prompts will all be up by Sunday at the latest, and then hopefully I'll be back on a regular schedule.

I think I'm also going to designate Sunday as the day I do further proofs and editing and actually throw these fics up on AO3 in finished forms. I originally wanted to include the Classic Doctor Who fill from Day 1 as the first in a drabble collection, but for practical reasons I think I'll post it separately and begin the drabble series in earnest either during NaNo or in December.

As an aside, I'm dedicating NaNo this year to finishing drafts and closing out some multichapter fics that have been sitting unfinished for the better part of a decade. One in particular I began writing in 2010, and I desperately want to finish it so I can start off the 2020s with a clean(er) slate.

Finished Day 1 of Fictober, though ultimately my third prompt got away from me a bit so I've put a pin in it. For practical purposes, these are unbeta'd, though when I throw them up on AO3 at some point in the future I'll try to clean them up a little.

Honestly, I'm pretty please that I managed to get 2/3 things I set out to do today done with the little free time I have in the middle of the day. Here's hoping I can keep this energy up and stick with the (very moderate) challenge I've set for myself. I'm drawing from a handful of different fictober challenges so I'll note which day is in response to what challenge.

30th-Sep-2019 01:29 pm - Seasonal Sickness
fh14: (Brain Dead [Oofuri])
So I've made a lot of posts recently about getting back into writing, but I haven't made many posts about finishing stories or prompts mostly because I've been very busy the last couple of weeks. But now today I've hit my first round of being inexplicably sick during autumn, though today I suspect it's a direct result of me running myself ragged this past weekend. I'm gonna try to go to bed as soon as I get home from work today and I'm hoping that'll work as a reset so I'll be back to normal tomorrow.

TV season is starting up again, and I've finally watched the season premiere of American Horror Story: 1984. It's made me glad I've invested the time into watching the Friday the 13th movies in particular, and I wanna try to get back into them this week if I have time. This weekend I'm planning on doing my first major *autumn* activities of the season so I'm hopeful it'll put me in the mood to get some writing done and actually hang up all my Halloween decorations.

As far as Classic Doctor Who goes, I've watched the first serial with Sarah Jane Smith, and I have four more with the Third Doctor. Now that my viewing schedule is getting busier I'm going to try to finish out this season and then put the show on hold for a bit. I had originally hoped to get through all of 70s' Who this year but there's no way that's happening now, so my new goal for next year is to get through all of the Fourth Doctor at the very least.
25th-Sep-2019 03:26 pm - Spooky Inspiration
fh14: (Glowing Jack-o-Lanterns)
I haven't be able to do much writing the past couple of weeks because I've alternated between being ridiculously busy and being exhausted, but this year I'm hoping to get some spooky-themed fics written since it's been a couple of years. So I'm tentatively planning to do the [community profile] spooktoberchallenge  this year, with my goal being 4-5 full oneshots (about one per week) and maybe a couple of additional drabbles. Though honestly I'll be thrilled if I can get one completed and polished.

(Also, I'm still planning on finishing this one Star Wars fic I've been writing since I'm halfway done with it. I'm hoping I can get that done before the end of the month.)

As of right now I'm still brainstorming ideas, but right now I think this is the pool of fandoms I'm gonna be picking from. (There are other properties like American Horror Story I've been enjoying lately but I haven't been particularly inclined to write fic for them so I'm not gonna push it.)
  • Classic Doctor Who (Particularly Two-era and Three-era)
  • Star Wars (Particularly Sequel Trilogy)
  • A Nightmare on Elm Street (Particularly Freddy's Revenge)
  • Hetalia
  • Promare
  • Big Windup!
  • Roswell, New Mexico
There's a chance that some other fandoms that I'm not thinking about right now like Supernatural might worm their way in - especially with the Fall TV season starting over the next couple of weeks - but right now these are the ones that I've been daydreaming up plots for during my downtime so I feel like it won't be too hard get the gears turning.

Also, in semi-related news, I'm planning on resuming my Friday the 13th/A Nightmare on Elm Street marathon at some point in the near future (maybe tonight if I have enough juice), and I really want to hit the rest of the Halloween movies this year as well. Maybe they'll serve as an additional source of inspiration! 🎃
fh14: (Dex [Check Please!])
So I'm almost done with season 10 of Classic Doctor Who. The only serial I currently have left is The Green Death, but I'm saving it for after my trip so I can watch it all in one sitting because I know it's Jo Grant's last hurrah. I'll go in depth more about it in my review post, but I was honestly shocked in the massive spikes and dips in quality from stories like Carnival of Monsters to material like Frontier in Space and The Planet of the Daleks. It's especially frustrating because the three middle stories this season are the only classic-style TARDIS journeys that weren't time lord missions that Jo Grant has, and two of them were, uh, not great. (Even though I thought Katy Manning was great in both of them).

I have to figure out how to properly set up a prompt generator using a custom character list, but I wanna start writing 500-word drabbles for Classic Who (and maybe other things?) as a way to flex my writing muscles and actually get stuff finished and published with less of a time commitment. Like, I still want to edit them and have them be good, but I feel like putting a 500 word cap may be a healthier goal than the 2000-word minimum I've operated on for a while. In particular I wanna do a set of drabbles focusing on Jamie McCrimmon and another set of drabbles focusing on Jo Grant, since they each are such specific characters that I love and I feel like would be fun to write for and have fun, existing dynamics I can explore. (And it gives me a productive excuse to rewatch clips from those eras of the show).

Aside from that, I still plan on finishing the Star Wars fic I was writing, especially since I'm really proud of what I have so far, but I think I need to step back from that for a few days at least because fandom stuff hit me in a really big way last night and I'm still not quite back in the right headspace for it.
9th-Sep-2019 11:56 am - Writing Breakthrough
fh14: ([Doctor Who] Jamie)
So after I posted yesterday's entry, two things happened. First, I tried to relabel my icons and didn't do it properly and everything reverted to my default icon, so I had to change everything back to their original keywords, and the whole experience was an hourlong headache I did not need to subject myself to in any way.

Secondly, I finally had the breakthrough I've been waiting for with writing fic. I even posted a new story to ao3 (a short, smutty Classic Who Jamie/Polly/Ben story). I definitely feel like it's a sandbox I'm more comfortable playing in now, and I already have an idea of a Jo Grant/Mike Yates story of a decidedly different tone. I've also written a couple of pages of a humorous Star Wars story focusing on Rose Tico that I'm hoping I'll have done before my trip this weekend.

Honestly, it felt so good just to sit down and WRITE again. I spent all of last night casually flipping back and forth between the last two episodes of Frontier in Space and just typing on my keyboard and it was one of the most pleasant nights I've had at home alone in recent memory. I'm just hoping I can keep this energy going into Autumn, since I really want to write some fics centered around that time of year. I think I may even revisit some finished drafts I abandoned a few years ago and rework them into material I can actually post.

But yeah, I'm writing again! It only took talking about wanting to write again for a year for it to actually happen.

8th-Sep-2019 03:23 pm - Classic Fandom and Other Ramblings
fh14: ([Doctor Who] TARDIS Scenery)
I'm halfway through the tenth season of Classic Doctor Who and as I'm approaching the end of the Master and Jo Grant era of the Third Doctor's run, I've been thinking a lot about fanworks for classic shows and in particular early, pre-Strikethrough fandom. I grew up accessing fanworks mostly on forums, fanfiction.net and other private websites (some of which are still up but many of which aren't).

The only years I heavily used livejournal was from 2010 until around 2012. The later part of this usage had my attention largely divided with twitter and tumblr in the mix as well (though I fell off twitter pretty hard for a few years, and in general I don't like it at all as a fandom platform even though I use it every day). With tinypic dying and photobucket pushing their watermarks on everything, it really feels like that era of fandom history is rapidly falling apart.

This is all a roundabout way of saying I kind of want to get more involved with Classic Who fandom, but I don't really know where to begin - especially since the scope of it is just so large. I'm still on the Third Doctor when I know a sizable amount of fans also gravitate toward the Fourth and Fifth Doctor eras. This is all assuming I can even get off my ass and start producing fanworks again, which is something I've desperately wanted to do but haven't been able to find the groove for.

During my sophomore year of college in 2011, I used to go to the library with the express goal of getting X amount of writing done for fic. While it was a bit chore-like, it really helped me get into the habit of writing, though I wouldn't reach my fanfic peak until the year following my graduation in 2014-15 when I somehow had the energy and motivation to write during my commutes to and from work.

I only have a couple of episodes left of this serial, and after that I might wander outside and try to get some writing done for old times' sake. I do want to finish that Hetalia multi-chapter I began in 2011 before this year is up, but in the meantime maybe I'll take a crack at some Classic Who or some Star Wars. Of course, this might all end up being some grand wishful thinking again, but I'd like to think that I can still write something if I really want to. I can certainly ramble a lot on here.
19th-May-2019 10:56 pm - Writing Goals
fh14: (Netherlands [Hetalia])
I didn't finish any submissions for [community profile] nordipalooza this year. I even went back and looked at some previous unused prompts but for some reason I've been hitting a wall. I think I need to take a break from writing the Nordics and at least try writing for some different Hetalia characters for a while.

Most of my shows either went on hiatus this past week or are going on hiatus this week, so I think I might try spending my lunch break sitting in a Starbucks or something and try to write 1000 words a day. I used to be able to write fic on the train and I might try taking a stab at that again too, especially since lately I've been wasting my time during my commute on time-killing apps and not even that Harry Potter one I'd been playing for a while.

The fests I'm interested in don't start until the Summer, so I think I'm gonna go back and finish some of the drabbles I've had collecting dust the last few years. There's a lot of them, and some of them are pretty decent and I'd like to get them done. Hell, I'd really love to finish Personal Chaos this year since I started writing that fic in 2011. Most of my drafts are Glee, but I'd also like to take a stab at writing for Star Wars since I've been really into that lately. Or maybe even Supernatural since that's ending this season.

I really miss the feeling of writing something for the sheer passion of it, but I'm starting to realize I need to make more of a concentrated effort to get that back.
16th-May-2019 10:39 am - I'm a Writer, I Swear!
fh14: (Momotaro [Free!])

I'm still bad at keeping up with Dreamwidth but I think everyone is to a point. I think part of it is I feel like I have to put in marginally more effort into these posts, rather than a site like twitter where I can just fart out whatever pops into my head. Tumblr's still alive even though I think everyone's way more pessimistic than they were even a few months ago. It kind of sucks because I actually prefer the longer-form types of social media like journals and blogs over social media like Twitter and Instagram. And, surprise surprise, it really looks like pillowfort shot it's wad before it ever really started, and I can't see it really taking off even in the niche way that Dreamwidth and Mastodon did.

[community profile] nordipalooza  is underway right now and I haven't made much progress on any of my prompts, even though the deadline is Sunday and I really want to finish writing something. I fell off writing in a big way back in 2016 and I really wanna get back into it. Hell, I would be thrilled if I could get back to the "one fic per month" pattern I shot for back in 2015. Maybe now that it's warmer now I can find a way to sit outside in the sun with my laptop for a few hours and just get as much done as I can. Hetalia is a good (and dynamic) well to go back to, but I'd also like to try to write some stuff for my other fandoms. I've had an Earth AU Star Wars fic that's been bouncing around in my head the last couple of months that I'd like to take a crack at, and I've been meaning to write a Harry Potter fic for actual decades.

There's been a couple of relapses, but overall I've been feeling much better about myself and where I am with my life since April and I wanna keep that energy going by getting back to some of the things I love. I wanna finish watching Glee finally before it's tenth anniversary on Sunday, and I have a complete X-Men film series watch planned in advance of Dark Phoenix, but after that I think I'm gonna take a break from that kind of structured media consumption. It gave me something to work towards when I was at some really low points the last couple of years but now I kind of want to get back to a place where I'm much more relaxed and varied with how I spend my time.

For reference, I'm linking a couple of fests/events that are coming up that I might wanna participate in. We'll see I guess.
fh14: (Obi & Zen [Snow White with the Red Hair])
(I'm leaving this post unlocked but that may change idek)

Lately I've been struggling to use fanfic as a writing outlet. This is mostly because I've just been really bad at finishing any writing in general (including fic chapters that have been mostly done for two years but I haven't gotten around to polishing off), but its also because a genre of fic I really want to write and get better at is M/M romance and erotica.

Most of the fic I have on AO3 has a romantic bent already but I don't feel like I'm particularly great at writing it, and while I'm still pretty proud of the one explicit fic I did post, I still don't feel particularly confident writing it. I have a draft of a Sam/Blaine Glee fic from forever ago that I still take stabs at once in a while, but the sex scene is the one that's been really tripping me up.

But yeah here's a dump of a couple of unfinished drabbles/drafts I've had in the pipeline for years or weeks. They range from a couple of paragraphs long to a few pages long in Word. Also fair warning they all end pretty abruptly because they are very unfinished.
