I mailed out the monthly mail yesterday, including to Canada since CanadaPost is still running (for now). Fingers crossed.

Would any Star Trek friends like a couple of brochures from Riverside Trekfest XXVIII? These turned up while sorting stuff at the 'rents and given some of their travels and stopping at every tourist trap they could in the past, they must've ended up in Riverside, Iowa once. (I'll post anywhere in the world. First come.)

Got almost all my physical zine stuff organized and made a post about it on [community profile] makezines. I think the only thing missing is The Home for Unwanted Robots and that might take some digging. But this was one of the goals for the weekend, so yay.

I also did a bunch more painting on my SD Heroes Strike Freedom, and then built like 2/3 of the white Alto. He'll get finished up today, surely, and then have his wings added on tonight? I don't know if I'll get to Plutone over the weekend, but I'll definitely get started on Flauros.

Entertaining: the Art of Maintaining Spoons

We had a young friend over for supper tonight. He's a reporter I've known for a few years. He's very good at what he does, although I sometimes wonder if he fully realizes it. He is an immigrant, whose family came to the U.S. when he was fairly young, and he's worked through some challenges, and done so very well, in my opinion. He recently became an American citizen.

I put together some slow-cooker beef bourguignon (well, it started that way, but I added a lot more than just red wine, plus vegetables that don't normally go into that dish), and an orange cake, put the place generally to rights, with Bob's help. I'd hoped to dust the living room, but Bob got the carpet vacuumed, and that made the place presentable.

For a wonder, everything was ready when our friend got here. It's been some time (as in, a few years) since we've had him over. We truly are hermits; we have friends who we haven't interacted with for horribly long periods of time ... anyhow, last week I ran into him at a social event for people who work for one of the local online news outlets I do stringer work for. He was feeling fairly down for various reasons, and asked if I could give him a hug. Well, that did it for me; I had to have him over for supper.

We had a really enjoyable time with him, for a couple of hours, and then I had to bring the evening to a close. The physical reason was because my back was starting to suggest that I should find some heat or ice as soon as possible. The mental and emotional reason was that I abruptly lost every one of my remaining spoons and I needed to be alone with Bob, STAT.

It happens to me, and to Bob. We still enjoy entertaining people, albeit not nearly as much as we used to, when we had a larger place, but it's always been tiring, and these days it's even more so. Entertaining people means you have to put your own best foot forward; you have to be on, in order to make sure your guests have a good time, to make sure you're listening to them, to make sure you're not talking too much at their expense, and so much more. And yes, you work hard to present yourself as an excellent host.

It is fucking exhausting. It's fun, but only for a given amount of time. Once that last spoon is gone? It's time to beat a determined retreat.

And that's what I'm about to do. Painkillers and heating pads, ho!

24th-May-2025 05:09 pm - Heron takes flight
autobotscoutriella: a green forest with the light shining through the trees (sunshine forest)
I accidentally walked up on this lovely heron at the lake today (US Midwest, small man-made lake that just happens to be close enough for me to walk to), and he was obliging enough to stand still until I had a chance to get out the camera! I see a lot of birds out there every year (right now we also have ducklings, a small geese population, and a lot of red-winged blackbirds), but this is the closest I've ever gotten to one of the herons, and I thought this community might like to see him.

Fairly sure it's a great blue heron, though I'm not a bird-identifying expert.

I think I'll withhold judgement until next week though. How the whole thing works depends on what he does with the ending. Nicely done so far but who knows.

Also listened to this week

Susan's War 3, Grandfather Time: more Time War stories, this time with the guy who doesn't want to be called The Doctor but thankfully for the writers will still answer to Grandfather.
I liked these two. Sending Susan on diplomatic rescue missions suits her. And this one of her grandfather has an extra edge to his actions, which compare contrasts interestingly to his earlier self who was still refusing the war after Susan had signed up.

These Susan's War stories give her plenty to do and I like that.

After the Daleks, a Doctor Who Early Adventure, picks up Susan's adventures when she was still trying to get into the TARDIS that last time, then keeps going until she actually chooses for herself from a number of available options. It does a lot of good stuff with the setting, not just the immediate leftovers of the Dalek invasion but politics and bad guys stoking hate of aliens just to win an election. It would be really nice if that story was never timely.

Susan and Jack have a lot in common, and it would be interesting for them to have a conversation about it. Also, Jack would get to the relevant era on the slow path, which is actually pretty worrying when you think they'd still have to wait for the Doctor to fix things. Except Jack is from after the Time War and we're only sure Susan was there Before. What that whole era looks like After the Time War is still a question.

But Jack got left behind and according to Big Finish ended up in the historical record in such a way you have to wonder if a conscientious time traveller had to leave him there. And Susan does something here that would put her on the record right away. So, interesting.

I continue to like Doctor Who, so that's nice.

I’ve been taking part in [community profile] auctionsasthreatened, and it’s been a blast! …And terrible for my sleep schedule, since the six hour window where the start/end times of auctions take place in overlap almost perfectly with when I should be sleeping on work nights, but idc, worth it <3

But that’s not actually the main point of this post! During the auction for my own sign-up, a few people expressed interest in my Cinderella Phenomenon request—and specifically, in wanting to hear a pitch for the game. Words cannot express how delighted I was by the opportunity, so I did that—and ended up having an incredibly fun conversation with someone else who was also familiar with the game <3

Anyways—long story short, I decided I wanted to preserve said pitch on my dreamwidth as well. This is exactly what I posted to discord (outside of updating the markdown to html so that it would display properly & inserting the single [non-custom] emoji I used), meaning this was originally posted in a series of messages rather than being meant to be read as a blog-style post, though I think it still flows clearly enough.

Sorry for answering some replies late. I'm back!
Using Dreamwidth on phone wasn't easy but I have good news: I finally have a new computer!

I finished a few series lately so I thought I'd do little reviews:

Call Me By No Name

GL, Japanese, 8 episodes, Gagaoolala

This was an intense and emotional watch. The themes and tone reminded me of the J-BL "Happy of the end" I watched last fall.
Serious, subtle, beautiful. Push-and-pull in the main relationship, wanting to save&being saved. Accepting feelings. Family trauma and sexuality. The virgin and the cool girl.

Apparently the GL community didn't receive this well (but it seems to be the case with anything more complex lmao). This series reminded me a lot of wlw relationships I know in irl and also how I used to be when I was younger.

I recommend this but I suggest to check the trigger warnings before if needed.

Mr. Plankton

South-Korean, 10 episodes, Netflix

I rarely watch straight romance anymore, and when this was trending on tiktok back on January I though it was going to be overrated because everyone was thirsting over Woo Do Hwan. To my surprise I actually ended up liking the series.

It's a genre hybrid of tragedy, comedy, and romance, but it works really well. This drama also deals with family trauma: the main "couple" (exes) are both orphans. It deals with issues such as abandonment, incurable disease, and found family. It's really well made and kept me hooked all 10 episodes. I haven't seen a good k-drama in a while(most of them i haven't been able to finish), but this one will stay with me.

These were pretty intense watches so I decided to watch something comforting next.
I started the J-BL "Our Dining Table". I loved the manga and so far I've really enjoyed the series.
I haven't started Pit Babe S2 yet but will probably soon, it's such a fun show. My only issue with it is that I don't really care for the side couples...we'll see if that changes with the new season.

For those who have go-to versions of common things like, say, meatloaf or brownies or curried chickpeas, how many recipes do you try before settling on one? Is there a point when you say "THIS. THIS is my [x]", or do you sometimes try new versions even when you have one you love? (Possibly this is a "once you've actually cooked a lot, you can look at a recipe and have a fairly good idea of what the different seasonings might add up to"?)

(I didn't help enough with any of the meals under the cuts to tag this post with YKYC, alas.)

24th-May-2025 01:21 pm - Found a stash of dream-related stuff
scifirenegade: (ugh | larry)
Title. A stray sheet of paper from two years ago/last year with dreams written on it.

There was one I posted here that went like this:

A film of [Conrad Veidt] was discovered. Joy! It wasn't Der Januskopf, or Satanas, but a secret third thing — (a made-up film). Imagine, if you will, Baroudi from Bella Donna, but only looks-wise. Personality-wise, Connie's unnamed character was a hero, trying to save his lover from the villain, who wanted to kill her. It was set in India.

Yeah, dreamt this one on the day I finished The Indian Tomb (haven't even watched Bella Donna yet; been too sick to do anything that requires more than 5% brainpower).

Run-of-the-mill stuff. Watching movies that don't exist is a common theme in my dreamland.

Well, besides the fact I have been subjected to Bella Donna since then, the sheet of paper contains more details. Connie's character was British. The film was like The Wizard of Oz: the film is in black and white until we reach India, then it's tinted. This bit is very important and I wonder why I didn't write it in the OG post. There may have been swordfights, but no Basil Rathbone (sad).

Taking the Yet Another Indian Film aside, there was one with Torsten, another with Oberaertz and yet another one with Erik at the beach. I will not get into details about them.

More dreams (straight from the original scribbles):

A new film is discovered, yet another in which Connie plays a good twin and a bad twin. Good twin is the clean-shaven one, the bad twin the the bearded one, interesting. Bad twin was a murderer, I think. It was a muddy mess of a film, all I remember was the final confrontation between the two brothers. After waking up, all I could think was Christopher Lee's "I know it might not be a good movie, but he will be."

What The Thief of Bagdad really needed was a series of direct-to-DVD sequels (ala Aladdin and other Disney flicks), all starring Jaffar. They were so low-budget. So bad. Kept watching them through my fingers. Poor Connie had the worst fake moustache and was stuck in the desert?? But somehow is plan was coming together??

It's Kurt and Paul's wedding. Yeah, the sad gay violinists. Honestly, it was very sweet. The venue had some nice wooden furniture, bright yellow wallpaper, flowers everywhere. They were so happy. So happy. But, because even this dream had to turn bizarro, when I played the guitar, it turned to clay in my hands.

The Ladies Road Guide to Utter Ruin
At first I was finding this sequel a bit tiresome compared to the first as there was a really heavy focus on the romance and the adventure/mystery parts were really taking a backseat, but it picked up a lot in the second half and now I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series (which unfortunately is not out yet).

Parallel
Graphic novel about a gay German man who wants to reconcile with his estranged daughter. It goes back and forth between the past (from when he was young in WWII) through his two failed marriages, and the present day of the comic, which is the 80s, when homosexuality was still illegal. I didn't love the art style (it was sometimes hard to tell characters apart, especially with the two timelines) but I enjoyed the story.

kalloway: (KoA Arthur 1)
I had really ambitious plans for the year re: zines and while I'm sure I'll fall a little short, I feel like there is still plenty of hope.

The original plan was one zine per month, while also basically doing updated/edited versions of all my old zines at the rate of also ~one per month. This sounds like a lot and it both is and isn't. (Right now it sure is!)

At some point, I'll probably take an extra long weekend or two and do some more catch up. (I have no real vacation plans again this year because look at the world on fire; I might as well make zines.)

Anyway- so far for 2025:
Dragon Stories (Jan) - done, copies available
Rimokon #2 (Feb) - partly done
Tiniest Tales #1 (March) - done, copies available? (might have to print more)
Cemetery Zine #0 (April) - partly done
Lost Dawn & The Box of Dreams (May) - partly done
Chic Musique #9 (June) - I know I had some vague notes for this but ???

Reprints:
Gods of Agassia (Jan) - from 2023, done, copies available
No Creature With Wings (Feb) - from 2007, needs edit + fix art/covers
Chic Musique #1 (March) - from 1998, will need to be retyped and reformatted, graphics might be tricky/will do my best
Chic Musique #2 (April) - haven't even looked at
Rimokon #1 (May) - haven't even looked at
Knocking Boots (June) - haven't even looked at, will probably just need an edit?
The Small Fandom Survival Guide (Unassigned) - from 2009, eight-page Yaoi-con panel extra, probably just needs a quick edit

Weekend plans include catching myself up through February, which just means an edit + fixing art on No Creature and, uh, writing like ten six more pages of a twelve page zine. Not actually impossible! (Big pictures, the secret is big pictures!)
